Working Genius Helps Fix the Friction

Do you work with other people? Do you live with other people? Have you ever gotten frustrated with something your coworker or spouse has done (or not done)?

Frustrated might be a loaded word. I’m not talking about fits of rage, but that subtle shaking of the head that says “man, they did it again” on a day you’re in a good mood…or a stronger reaction on a day you’re not.

No? Just me? Then, welcome to my diary.

I truly believe the friction of working with people who think and behave differently than we do is a natural part of the human experience. I think the way I approach ideas and problems is the best way, even though I may not have the best ideas. We all naturally bring our own flavor to work. But if I bring my own flavor and your bring yours, then how to make sure our flavors work together?

Enter Working Genius – a work style assessment. It’s not about your personality as much as how you approach problems, opportunities, and situations.

Around 2021 I stumbled onto Working Genius and slowly became immensely curious. The assessment opened my eyes to some of my idiosyncrasies, and helped me give people a cheat sheet on how I approach work. My pairing is called the Contemplative Counselor, which if you’ve read much of what I’ve written, I’m guessing that’s not a surprise to you.

But more than that, I would put off easy checklist items, rethink things that didn’t necessarily need rethinking, and loved evaluating to make the next time better.

Slowly, as I started spreading the word about Working Genius, I started to understand the people I worked with, also. Both coworkers and volunteers I led. I found myself not getting frustrated when “so and so” always did xyz. Instead, I understood they were operating in their preferred geniuses. And it changed the way I approached ministry.

Now, as my career has shifted, Working Genius has shed light on so much of what I do – ranching with family, leading workshops, and even coaching.

If you’ve talked with me recently, you’ve probably heard me get passionate about Working Genius and the implications for understanding bosses, coworkers, volunteers, and especially spouses/family. Working Genius isn’t about personality, it’s about how you prefer to approach a task.

I’m not intending this to be a sales pitch, but here’s what I know – someone reading this is curious to learn more. If so, head to workinggenius.com and take the assessment. Then, if you need help understanding the results, head over to 3qlconsulting.com and schedule a call. I’d love to talk you through your results.
